Mariners tournament champions 2018
The Mariners A team won their own tournament for the second time defeating the Paisley Buccaneers 4-1 in the final. Despite suffering group stage defeats to both the Buccaneers and the Coatbridge Coyotes to qualify in third spot the Mariners overcame both teams in succession to lift the trophy for the second time in 4 years.
The Mariners B, also competing managed to secure two victories over the Ayrshire Amazons and the Kilmarnock Piranhas finishing 5th and narrowly missing out on a semi final spot.

2016-17 Season review
The Mariners can look at their 10th anniversary year with some pride, all 3 teams producing positive results.
A team - Remained in the Scottish Plate by finishing 4th in a very difficult group and reached the final of the Mariners tournament, only losing on penalty shots.
B team - Reached the final of the Scottish Bowl which secures promotion to the Scottish Quaich next season. A second final appearance at the Piranhas tournament, only losing on penalty shots. The Hellcats tournament provides one last opportunity for the B team to grab silverware.
C team - Took their first victory against the Lowland Raiders in their maiden season as a fully functioning team. An appearance at the Piranhas tournament provided some great experience for the players to develop.
With such positive steps made this year we are sure that 2017-18 will be just as positive.

Capitals hold their nerve in the shoot-out!
The Mariners Invitational winners 2017 were the Highland Capitals, defeating the Mariners A 1-0 in a penalty shoot-out following a 1-1 final. The Mariners made their 5th final appearance but could not add a winners medal on this occasion, thanks to some splendid netminding from the Capitals stand in netminder.
The A team had positive results over all their opponents in the group stage except for the eventual winners, making it a positive weekend albeit finishing runners-up once more.
The B team fought for every game, but a team missing some notable players were always going to be up against it when facing Scottish Plate standard teams. Only a last minute winner stopped them securing points against the Mustangs, in fact they were worth the victory in honesty.

Piranhas chew at Mariners Ship - Scottish Bowl 2017
The Mariners B competed in the Scottish Bowl on Sunday 23rd of April where they got off to a great start by beating the Inverness Hurricanes and the Lowland Raiders in their first two games, they for came to defeat by the Caledonian Thunder before meeting them again in the Semi-Final which they won to set up a Final between the Mariners B and Kilmarnock Piranhas, unfortunately a bad start, going down a goal in the first few minutes found them chasing the rest of the game, tired legs came about as the Mariners couldn’t break down the Piranhas defence and surrendered another goal late on to lose the game.
On the plus side it assures that the Mariners B get promotion up into the Quaich for next year’s tournament.
Mariners 4-0 Hurricanes
Mariners 6-0 Lowland Raiders

Mariners 3-0 Thunder SEMI FINAL

Scottish Bowl & Scottish Plate 2017
The Mariners B have been invited to take part in the Scottish Recreational Bowl, the newly created 4th tier of Scottish recreational hockey. The Mariners will play the Inverness Hurricanes, Lowland Raiders and the Caledonian Thunder in the group phase. There will be two promotion places available to the Quiach so there is a lot to play for over the one day.
The Mariners A will be competing in the Scottish Plate again in 2017. The draw for groups sees the Mariners face a tough group including Glenrothes Cougars, Edinburgh Lions, Aberdeen North Stars and Dumfries Demons. On paper this looks like one of the closest competitions in the recreational set up as any of the 10 teams could lay a stake to the Plate this year.

The Mariners are 10!
This season will be the 10th of the Mariners existence. Starting with just a handful of fathers in 2007. Fast forward 10 years and we are now the largest recreational ice hockey team in Scotland - possibly the world - with close to 100 members. There will be many events over the year to celebrate this milestone. The first one is a special commemorative logo created by our very own Chris Ward. You'll be seeing this on some exciting projects very soon!

The Buccaneers sink the Mariner's ship
The Paisley Buccaneers defeated the Mariners A team 1-0 in the final of the Mariners Tournament to lift the trophy for the second time. The tournament threw up some mixed results meaning it was a close finish for the top 4 spots; Knights (by virtue of head to head) and Coyotes (by one point).
The semi finals saw the Buccaneers defeat the Aberdeen North Stars 5-3, the Mariners A defeating the Highland Capitals 2-1. The final was closely matched but the Buccaneers took their chance and scored the only goal of the game winning 1-0.
The Mariners B were unlucky not to pick up more points. Were it not for a last second save they would have tied 3-3 with the A team. However, they did pull off the shock result of the weekend managing to tie with the Aberdeen North Stars.

Mariners Tournament 2016
The Mariners will host their tournament for the 5th year running at the weekend. The tournament has been won by a different team each year so far, a credit to the teams involved. Hoping to get their hands on the trophy once more will be the Aberdeen North Stars, Highland Capitals, Paisley Buccaneers and Mariners A. The teams hoping to lift it for the first team are the Coatbridge Coyotes, Mariners B and the Edinburgh Knights B.

Mariners B/C - Hamilton Tournament
The Mariners took part in the Hamilton Tournament this weekend to face off against the Edinburgh Knights, Stirling Wolves, Glasgow Mustangs and The Highlanders.
Edinburgh Knights 09:00 (4-4 D)
The Mariners started off the tournament in fine form with a quick brace of goals in the first period. The Knights managed to claw themselves back and take the lead 4-2. Another two late goals from the Mariners managed to tie the game up at 4-4 but with both teams not content with the point, the opening game of the tournament ended up a very exiting 'end to end' game, unfortunately for the neutrals both netminders were on form and the match ended up a draw.
Stirling Wolves 13:00 (3-0 L)
The Mariners second game of the tournament was against the favourites to lift the cup, the Stirling Wolves. With a stellar performance from a make-shift Mariners team they managed to keep the Wolves huffing and puffing and trying to blow the house down, but to no avail. Unfortunately the breakthrough was made just before the end of first period when they finally got through David Morrison after numerous heroic saves. With the Wolves being increasingly frustrated they got two further goals in the second period to beat the Mariners 3-0 but with heads held extremely high.
Mustangs 17:45 (5-0 L)
The last game on Saturday was vs the well known Glasgow Mustangs. With an even more so depleted team the Mustangs took full advantage with getting two quick goals at the start of the period. After weathering the storm for much of the game it started to become feisty, unfortunately that only benefited the Mustangs. They went on to record another 3 goals before the end of the match for them to romp to a 5-0 victory over the Mariners.
Highlanders 09:45 (4-1 L)
The next morning we took on the Highlanders (who needed to record at least a 10-0 victory for any chance to qualify), those expectations were crushed as the Mariners went 1-0 up half way through the first period. With a short bench the Mariners started to tire and it showed with the Highlanders recording the next 4 goals without reply. thus ending the tournament for both teams.
Overall a very good display from a very makeshift Mariners team, many thanks to David Strachan for taking the bench and;
A - John Hunter, Gary Poyser, Marc Simpson
B - David Morrison, Andy Campbell, Steven Milby, Ross Kirkland, John Robb, Euan Leckie, Alan Stuart
C - Jim Semple, Michael Clasper, Colm MacQueen, Ross Murray, Josh Houston
who all put in good shifts.

Mariners C - Weathered the Thunder
The Mariners C team took on Caledonian Thunder at Ayr with only 11 players, against a strong line of 16 Thunder players. However this made no difference to the Mariners as they displayed courage and effort throughout and it turned out to be an absolute thriller.
Mariners defended well with a constant flow of Thunder attacks from the off but that led to great breakout opportunities of their own with Josh Houston getting his first Mariners goal after 5 minutes of play but trailed 3- 1 at the end of the first period.
During the second period thunder came out strong again but there was no getting by (who turned out to be our man/woman of the match) ‘Kelly Grindrod’. The Thunder star players kept trying to penetrate our defence but when Kelly stepped on to the ice, it was like taking “candy from a baby”, but after weathering the storm, by the end of the second period the Thunder came out on top 6-1.
Into the third, The Mariners came out strong but their legs were soon to tire with only 3 rotating Defensive players. They fought hard till the end recording another couple of goals from John Robb and with the opportunity of a penalty shot the tension mounted. Michael Clasper stood centre ice, with the opportunity to record his 4th goal of the season, the whistle went and he was off down the ice (his mum and sister held their breaths from the side of the rink) only to witness a fluff shot right in front of the goal mouth. After weary legs and a couple of Thunder goals in the last 10 minutes, this most entertaining game ended up 10-3 to the Thunder who’s coach Jim Patton quoted saying that “we struggled to break The Mariners down, and the score did not reflect the result”.

Mariners B - Winning streak stopped by Skyhawks
After a three game (and 30 goal's) winning streak the Mariners B team travelled to Fife to face the Carnegie Skyhawks in search for their fourth successive win on the trot.
It started off according to plan when Thomas Mills opened the scoring within with first 5 minutes to give the Mariners the lead but the Skyhawks pulled level before the end of the 1st.
The Skyhawks took the lead 3 minutes into the 2nd period but it was the Mariners turn to peg them back with a goal from Andrew Carswell in the dying seconds.
Into the final period the Skyhawks took the lead for the second time only to be pegged back by a goal from David Strachan to tie the game at 3-3 going in to the final 5minutes, unfortunate for the Mariners, who lost this fixture 16-3 last year, the Skyhawks got the next goal and with time running out for the Mariners, we got caught on the break with a goal in the final 2 minutes to make the final score 5-3.
All in all a good team performance and congratulations to John Robb who won the MOM

Mariners winning weekend
The Mariners A travelled to Edinburgh to pick up a victory while the Mariners B defended home ice against the Caledonian Thunder to seal their third win on the spin.
The B team took on the Caledonian Thunder at Auchenharvie, a steady flow of goals seen the score 6-3 after the 2nd period. A strong third period and the Mariners ran out 9-3 winners. The Thunder will face the Mariners at the Scottish Quaich later in the year so it is a very positive result for the Mariners.
The A team travelled to Murrayfield ice rink to face Edinburgh Stingers. What turned out to be a very close game finished 4-1 to the away side.

C Team

I'd like to say a huge thank you to all the organisers of the event, without their hard work there would be no event so well done!
Mariners bring home the cup!
An eventful day in Stirling concluded with The Mariners lifting the Danny McMillan Summer Trophy. The Mariners A seen themselves crush their opponents 2-0, 8-0, 10-0 and 5-0 before beating the Glasgow Mustangs 3-0 in the final. It was a very competent performance by Mariners A and special comments must go to Garry Grindrod as he stopped everything he was faced with (literally!) It was an unfortunate day for the B team, with 3 disallowed goals in the first match they lost that one 3-2. Those 'goals' would have secured a spot in the final for them making it an all Mariners final.
I am sure everyone would agree that the 2015-16 season has started brightly and will hopefully be the Mariners best yet!

Mariners B v Glasgow Mustangs 17/01/15
Mariners B got off to a flyer in 2015 with a 5-3 victory against the Glasgow Mustangs at Ayr ice rink on Saturday night. The Mariners were able to ice a strong 15 skaters for the first time this season and they used it to their advantage. It did not take long for the Mariners to take the lead in the match, Thomas Mills scoring past the netminder assisted by Andrew Campbell. The mustangs replied after a few minutes through defence man Marc Wilson shooting from the blue line to beat Jim Foster in the goal. The remaining 12 minutes were to be played out without goals as both netminders made countless saves. The second period saw the usual rivalry flaring up, Scott Campbell taking a penalty after taking out Kyle Dunlop. The Mariners powerplay line delivered a goal un-assisted by David Kerr. Just when it looked as if the Mariners would continue to dominate the game the Mustangs caught a lucky break to level the game and then went ahead for the first time in the game; a second goal for Marc Wilson. It was again Thomas Mills who would find the net for the Mariners after some tidy build up play from line mate Marc Simpson to level the scores once more. With 9 seconds remaining in the period the Mustangs fell foul to another a penalty which was immediately punished. John Gardiner receiving the puck on the blue line to feed William Bruce to guide past the static netminder.
The 3rd period remained a tight affair for 10 minutes as both teams looked for that all important goal. It was John Dunlop who was to produce it through Sarah Grant and John Gardiner to ensure the Mariners got 2015 off to a good start.
Points: Thomas Mills 2+0, David Kerr 1+0, John Dunlop 1+0, William Bruce 1+0, John Gardiner 0+2,
Sarah Grant 0+1,Andy Campbell 0+1, Marc Simpson 0+1

Blacks take a 1-0 series lead
The black team took a 1-0 lead in the series after a 6-5 victory over the blues at Ayr ice rink on Tuesday night.
In the first game of the Mariners cup series the blacks took the spoils after holding out towards the end. The first period was a very tight affair with both teams having attempts on goal, Jim Foster thwarting the blues at every attempt as he played the game of his life. The blues shaded the period 1-0 but will feel aggrieved as a goal on the buzzer was ruled out by the referee.
The game changed in the second period as the black re-jigged the order of lines. The tactic worked with the blacks winning the period 4-0 including highlight goal scored by John Gardiner from the blue line.
The match resorted to the same levels as the first in the final period with both teams matching each other in all areas of the rink. The blues were able to use all four lines to their advantage as fresher legs meant a good burst of energy in the dying minutes. With the blacks leading 6-4 in the final minute Garry Grindrod skated to the bench allowing an extra attacker to join the game, this proved too much for the blacks as they couldn't handle the onslaught. William Bruce slammed home from close range to make it 6-5 with only seconds to go.
The clock ran down and the score finished 6-5 to the blacks who take a deserved lead in the series, although the blacks may have been under strength the future games I am sure will remain competitive with the blues look to hit back at the first time of asking.

Mariners A v Edinburgh Lions - 14/12/14
The Mariners A secured a comprehensive yet unimpressive win over the Edinburgh Lions in a long awaited home game. A strong start was the saving grace for the Mariners are they raced to a 6-2 lead by the end of the first period. The Lions shook off the "bus" legs and stepped it up a few gears. Goals were shared between the two teams for the remaining 40 minutes with the final score ending 8-4.
It was a promising start on the Mariners return to home ice but their will be a lot of disappointment with the overall performance first period aside.
Points: Ian Forsyth 3+1, David Armstrong 1+1, Calum MacLeod 1+1, Colin Cameron 1+0,
Chazz Crawford 1+0, John Drummond 1+0, John Hunter 0+1, Kevin Rafferty 0+1, Eric Young 0+1, Ross Dykes 0+1

Mariners B v Edinburgh Lions - 28/11/14
The Mariners B team went down 10-2 against the Edinburgh Lions in a late night fixture at Murrayfield ice rink on Friday night. A short benched Mariners team took a trip along the M8 to Edinburgh to face the Edinburgh Lions. The scoreline sadly did not reflect the effort produced by the team who improved as the match continued. 1st Period score finished 5-1, 2nd 4-1 and the 3rd 1-1. Andy Carswell picked up his first goal for the Mariners and Gary MacColl also grabbing his first assist for the Mariners, well done to both of you!

Mariners return to training
After a long rest period the Mariners team will return to the ice this week to prepare for another thrilling season. Both teams made improvements in season 13/14 with the highlights being Mariners B competing in the Scottish Quaich and the Mariners A finally winning their own tournament at the third opportunity. Another promising season lies in wake for the Mariners; the highlight undoubtably their trip to Toronta, Canada in October where 2 teams will take part in a 3 day tournament against tough Canadian opposition.
Mariners Tournament 2014 28-29/06/14
The 3rd annual Mariners Tournament took place at the weekend with 10 teams hoping to finish top of the pile and take home the trophy. Mariners A, Mariners B, Kilmarnock Piranhas, Glasgow Mustangs, Aberdeen North Stars, North East Nomads, Paisley Buccaneers, Highland Capitals, Coatbridge Coyotes and a Tournament select team.
After an exciting weekend the Mariners A team defeated the Glasgow Mustangs to win the trophy at the 3rd time of asking. The Mariners A started brightly by winning their opening fixture 5-0 against the Aberdeen North Stars, they followed this up with a disappointing 0-0 draw with the Kilmarnock Piranhas. The final match of the day was a 5-0 victory over the tournament select team. Although no goals had been conceded the 0-0 draw meant that passage in to the semi finals would not be in the Mariners own hands going in to the second day. That began with a 6-1 victory over the Mariners B which kept pressure on the Highland Capitals. The lifeline required was gifted to the Mariners as the Kilmarnock Piranhas recorded their second 0-0 draw of the weekend with the Highland Capitals meaning a 5-0 victory over the Glasgow Mustangs seen the Mariners in to the semi final. |
The Mariners B, were drawn in a difficult group having to play The Highland Capital, Paisley Buccaneers, Mariners A, North East Nomads and the Coatbridge Coyotes. That said they went out and pushed every one of the teams.
They started the day with a game against the Highland Capitals but were defeated 7-0 before losing to the Coatbridge Coyotes 5-0 then North East Nomads 4-0. Day one results meant that they would be unable to qualify for the semi finals. Mariners B started day two with a 6-1 defeat to Mariners A, goal coming from William Bruce which turned out to be the only goal Garry Grindrod conceded in the group matches. The final game of the tournament was a 5-0 defeat to the Paisley Buccaneers. Although the Mariners were defeated in all 5 games they are gaining more experience all the time, experience that will only help the team to progress in the future. The Mariners A semi final seen them play the Kilmarnock Piranhas for the second time of the weekend. This time the Piranhas took the lead after a break away goal, however it wasn't long until the Mariners had got in to the game to record a 4-1 victory to see them in to their 3rd final in as many years. The other semi final seen the Glasgow Mustangs take on the Paisley Buccaneers. The match did not go as expected due to a dogged performance from the Mustangs. The match ended 1-1 before the Mustangs won the resultant shoot-out 1-0. The final match between Mariners A and Mustangs was geared up to be an exciting match, it only took 34 seconds for the Mustangs to breach the Mariners goal. Similarly to the semi final the Mariners came back in to the match strong and eventually seeing out a comfortable 5-1 victory and a history making performance for the Mariners! Players awards: Netminder of the tournament - Garry Grindrod, Mariners A Defenceman of the tournament - Mark Byrne, Mariners B Player of the tournament - Marias Saulits, Highland Capitals Top points of the tournament - Marias Saulits, Highland Capitals |
Paisley Blackhawks tournament. 19/05/14
This weekend The Mariners have been invited to take part in the Paisley Blackhawks tournament, held in Dumfries. The Mariners will play Irvine Flyers, Dundee Michelin, Edinburgh Lions, Newcastle Coyotes and the Ayr Lions over the weekend. The other participating teams are Paisley Blackhawks, Dumfries Demons, Northern Ireland Prowlers and Paisley Panthers.
The first game for the Mariners is 09:10 on the Sunday and 10:05 on the Sunday.
Can all players take the time to look at the PDF document below the image and understand the rules and timings of the matches. Most important piece of information is that penalty box duty requires two people from each team, failure to turn up for penalty box duty results in a 1 point deduction! We are only required to do it twice but don't let it be the same people each time.

Mariners A crash out of the Plate. 04/05/14
The Mariners A crashed out of the Scottish Plate at the semi final stage for a second successive season in Dumfries last weekend. The Mariners took part in group A where they defeated Paisley Buccaneers 7-1, Edinburgh Lions 2-0 and Edinburgh Stingers 7-3 along with a defeat at the hands of Dumfries Demons 2-0. 3 wins from 4 in the group was enough to pip the Lions to second spot after Demons took maximum points. Boreland Kilts who also had an undefeated group campaign were waiting in the semi finals for the Mariners. In what was a hard match the Kilts took the upper hand to take a 3-0 lead at the half way mark. 2 further goals came before the Mariners managed to spoil a clean sheet for the Kilts net minder. A few further chances were squandered by the Mariners and the match ended 5-1, with that it was time for the Mariners to head home.
The final seen Dumfries Demons play Boreland Kilts, Dumfries winning 2-1.
The Mariners however did not leave empty handed, a fair play award trophy and top points for Iain Forsyth ensured a few cars returned heavier than they arrived.
The Mariners should not be down heartened by the result of the weekend, 2 semi final appearances in 2 years is an accolade many other teams would be proud of. Another year of preparation starts now to hopefully go that one match further next year. Sadly for the Highland Capitals and the Paisley Buccaneers they will have to compete for the Scottish Quaich next year as they are relegated, replaced by Aberdeen Predators and Leuchers Knights.

Mariners B take a sip from the Quaich. 13/04/14
The Mariners B took part in the inaugural Scottish Quaich tournament hosted in Fife over the weekend. The Mariners were dealt a blow when Kevin McCormick revealed an injured ankle mid week would rule him out of the tournament. Unable to pull enough players into the team meant the Mariners took on the weekend with only 9 skaters.
Up first was the Kilmarnock Piranhas; 6-1 winners just a few weekends ago. The Mariners started brightly by going 1 goal up through Marc Simpson but the Piranhas came back to score four goals including a couple of fortunate bouncing pucks. Next for the Mariners were the Edinburgh Lions B, the lions showed good discipline in their play by not giving the Mariners any space in behind the defence. 5 goals for the lions meant a comfortable win on paper but everything but on the ice. The Mariners will feel aggrieved after hitting both posts and the cross bar as well as many other chances to light up the score board. Kevin McCormick; watching from the stands was torn between teams and left shortly after the match. The final game of the day for the Mariners was against the local team Carnegie Skyhawks. Local knowledge of the rink was obvious from the start of this match as Carnegie made use of the spacious ice pad to pass the puck around stretching the Mariners team all over the place. A solitary goal from Marc Simpson ensured another whitewash was not to be had. 5 goals for the Skyhawks driven on by their star defenceman ensured a relatively comfortable victory in the end even if it was the Mariners best performance of the day.
After the hockey we all went back to the hotel, got some food, relaxed and got to bed early to fully prepare for the next day.....or at least that's how I remember it.
Sunday seen one game for the Mariners as they were already eliminated due to losing 3 on the opening day. So what could have been a meaningless game was anything but as the Mustangs were the team to face. Unfortunately with the Mariners being down to 8 skaters by this point it was always going to be a hard ask to match a Mustangs team who had the ability to play 3 full lines. The game started in the same fashion a Mariners v Mustangs match does, with plenty of hits and penalties! Eventually the Mustangs fresher legs paid off and they ran out convincing 7-0 victors to book their place in the semi finals (later defeated by Leuchars Knights) Gloves were close to being dropped on a few occasions nearing the end of the match as tempers flared.
All in all the Mariners will feel disappointed they were unable to give a better account of themselves over the weekend but it was always going to be a massive challenge with such a short bench, a few extra players and things could have been very different for them. Another year will pass and improvements will be made, the Mariners will hopefully be back at the Scottish Quaich next year for another crack at the whip.

Mariners B v Kilmarnock Pirahnas 23/04/14
The Mariners took on the Kilmarnock Pirahnas is a closely contested match eventually losing out 3-1 at Ayr ice rink on Sunday evening. The Mariners were looking to record their first victory is 3 games following defeats from both Coatbridge teams and it was looking promising after the first period. Marc Simpson scored the only goal of the period (18.29) following assists from Gary Poyser and Elaine McBride, it capped off a very good period for the Mariners one which could have went either way. The second period was again a very tight affair, both netminders were called upon time after time without a break through. It wasn't until 33.49 that Garry Grindrod's net was breached as the Pirahnas equalised. The period ending with a scoreline 1-1.
Going in to the final period both teams felt that match was there for the taking, the Mariners had chances through Andy Campbell, William Bruce and Thomas Mills but the netminder was able to match it at every attempt. The Pirahnas finally took the lead at 46.55 before sealing the match 48.02. The two quick goals knocked the wind out of the Mariners and the Pirahnas were able to see out the victory.
Both teams will now look forward to the Scottish Quaich with a semi final match up a real possibility.

Confirmed teams for the Paisley Blackhawks tournament are; Paisley Blackhawks, Ayr Lions, Dumfries Demons, Edinburgh Lions, Irvine Flyers, Mariners, North Ireland Prowlers, Newcastle Coyotes & Paisley Panthers with one more to be announced. Games will be played at the Dumfries ice bowl over the weekend of 24 & 25 May.
Mariners A v Aberdeen North Stars 23/04/14
It was unlucky number 13 for Aberdeen North Stars as their 6 game unbeaten streak was ended by an in-form Mariners team, losing 13-4 at Ayr ice rink. The Mariners continued where they left off last week by hitting double figures for the second succesive weekend. It didn't take long for the first goal; a stramash around the North Stars goal fell to John Hunter who fired the puck high beyond the netminder at 3.25. The North Stars did come back and equalised at 6.16 before John Drummond scored unassisted at 7.04. Again the North Stars pegged back scoring on 13.50. Eric Young finished off a nice move by Ross Dykes at 18.55 to give the Mariners a lead going in to the second period.
The Mariners showed their intent in the second period and continued to push forward, however the North Stars hit on the break at 21.49. Ross Dykes gave the Mariners a lead from Eric Young on 28.09 which started a dominant phase of play. Iain Forsyth (30.04), John Drummond (35.07) and Eric Young (36.44) all scoring during the second period to give the Mariners a 7-3 lead.
The final period again was largely dominated by the Mariners, John drummond picking up where he left off scoring after 30 seconds to complete his hat-trick; his second in two weeks. John Hunter (42.30) the North Stars managing a goal at 50.34 before Iain Forsyth extended the lead (52.20) then Eric Young completing his hat-trick on 55.32. Two more goals were to fall for the Mariners, a fourth to John Drummond (56.38) then Ally Prince (57.48) completing the rout.
Another convincing win for the Mariners who are now firmly focussed on the Scottish Plate in early May.

Mariners B v Coatbridge Redwings 16/03/14
The Mariners B continued their preparation for the Scottish Quaich with a high scoring 16-11 defeat to the Coatbridge Redwings at the Time Capsule. Sarah Grant made her first appearance as a netminder in the match and should feel pleased with a performance that improved as the match progressed. It was the Redwings that opened the scoring after 6 minutes and although the Mariners quickly responded through Jamie McGeachy, Davie Kerr and Andy Logue it was to be Coatbridge that won the first period with a score of 7-3. The Mariners were to press their opponenets in the second period with goals coming from Thomas Mills, Davie Kerr and Andy Logue. Some strong defending and impressive goaltending meant only 3 goals were conceded; which meant the scoreline was 4-3 for the period and 10-7 in the match. The Mariners came out strong for the final period looking to capitalise on the Redwings defensive frailities and it wasn't long until Andy "Canada" Logue had completed his hat trick. However the pressure did not continue and Coatbridge took control to see the game out 16-11 even with a late flurry of goals for the Mariners which included a 5th assist for Marc Simpson. The match was a good workout for the Mariners at a time that most players did not know existed on a Sunday morning!

Mariners A v Leuchars Knights 16/03/14
The Mariners welcomed Leuchars Knights to Ayr for a rematch following the 4-4 draw last weekend. The Mariners were keen to stop the Knights undefeated streak but more importantly show some dominance in the run up to the Scottish Plate. It did not take long for the Mariners to opening the scoring, Ally Prince making a long pass to Ian Forsyth who shot past the keeper after only 43 seconds. Six more goals were to follow before the 10th minute; Kevin Rafferty, John Drummond, John Hunter, Ross Dykes and Ian Forsyth completed his hat-trick. The first period ended with the score at 11-1 and the Mariners were in total dominance against a team that were severely lacking compared to last weekend. The Knights did play better for the remaining 40 minutes but they were still powerless against a full of energy Mariners team, further goals from John Hunter, Ross Dykes, Eric Young, Ross Cree, William Bruce and Iain Forsyth ensured a 19-2 victory. Leuchars will feel they struggled to get a foot in to the game but the Mariners were the hungrier team and the score reflected this. The Mariners will face Aberdeen next before heading to the Scottish Plate.

Mariners A v Leuchers Knights 09/03/14
The Mariners stayed up well beyond their bedtime to record their second tied game of the year against Leuchers Knights at Dundee ice arena. A combination of late night face off and car legs meant that the Mariners fell to a 3-0 deficit inside the first period. A much better second period was in store for the Mariners, the deadlock was broken as Kevin Rafferty fired low and hard across the net for Eric Young to deflect it goalwards. Some neat break out play led to Ross Dykes having a shot on goal saved by the netminder for it to hit John Hunter on the shoulder and land in the net to make it 2-3. The Knights did extend their lead to two goals again before another Eric Young goal assisted by John Hunter ensured the Mariners were only the single goal behind going in to the final period. Although both teams pushed through the burn there was only to be one more goal in the match, John Hunter breaking in to the offensive zone before playing a pass to Ross Cree who fired into the net. A dissapointing start for the Mariners but a lot of strength was shown to fight back for the tie against a well drilled Knights team.

Mariners B v Coatbridge Coyotes 09/02/14
Last night the Mariners went up against the newly formed team the Coatbridge Coyotes at the re-developed Time Capsule, which has potential to be the smallest ice hockey surface in Scotland. None the less The Mariners gave a professional performance on a tight rink to see off the Coyotes 5-2.
It only took a few minutes for the Mariners to open their account, Kevin McCormick finding Marc Simpson who was able to direct the puck past the netminder. For a new team the Coyotes have a good blend of quality players most noteably ex Mariner Neil Secmezsoy-Dunn. Their first goal was a wonderful solo effort by their left winger who was able to go past the defence and shoot high past Garry's glove to make it 1-1. The Mariners responded well to conceding, Sarah Grant passing to WIlliam Bruce who was able to shoot low and hard beating the netminder from just inside the blue line. Much to-ing and fro-ing continued for the period but it was to finish at 2-1.
The Mariners managed to control the second period with some hard defensive effort and lots of good skating up top, the Coyotes were now struggling to keep their shape as the puck was being moved from side to side with ease. However the Mariners next goal was not to come from intricate delicate play instead from hard graft and effort! William Bruce managing to force to puck beyond the netminder after a stramash in front of the net. Their was to be little rest for the Coyotes as Kevin Rafferty recieved the puck from Marc Simpson on his own blue line, using a turn of pace he managed to get beyond the defence and using all of his skill managed to direct the puck into the net to make the score 4-1.
The final period was a much tighter affair, even after the Mariners scored to make it 5-1, a slap shot from Kevin Rafferty. The Coyotes could smell blood as the Mariners legs began to tire. The home team called a timeout to re-jig their lines for the remaining 9 minutes, which became 9 minutes of defending back to the wall for the Mariners. Even with all the Coyotes best players on the ice the Mariners were able to defend their zone which was beginning to look like a scene from the film The Alamo! In the final minutes their was a breach as the Coyotes scored to reduce the defiect to 5-2 which was to be the final score.
It was another good victory for the Mariners who have now won 3 of their last 4 games, next up for the Mariners will be the Coyotes at Ayr ice rink.

Mariners A v Ayr Lions 01/02/14
The Mariners took to the ice to face the Ayr Lions on Saturday evening in what was tipped to be a hotly contested match. The Lions were caught off guard as the Mariners raced in to a two goal lead, Ross Dykes following up the rebound after Gary Poyser's shot was saved then Ross Cree stealing the puck from the defence to score past the netminder. The two goals should have provided a base for the Mariners to build on but it seems it only worked to wake the Lions from their daze, 3 goals for the Lions without reply meant the Mariners were 3-2 down at the end of the first period.
Unfortunately things were not to get any better for the Mariners, in what was a very tight second period luck was on neither teams side with pucks bobbling about, stopping in corners and general poor play, coupled with two impressive netminders means that only 1 goal was to be scored and that again was for the Lions.
The third period came and went, even though the Mariners played some good hockey and had a number of chances none were to find their way into the Lions net, on the other hand the Lions were now having no bother finding their way past Garry Grindrod scoring 4 more goals to win the game 8-2.
The Mariners will feel rather aggrieved to lose by a score of 8 to 2 as it was not a 6 goal game for anybody watching, a bit more composure in front of goal and some more luck in centre ice would have resulted in a much fairer scoreline. Nonetheless the Mariners now focus on a double header against the Irvine Flyers before hoping to perform well at the Scottish Plate later this year.

Mariners B v Glasgow Mustangs B 28/01/14
The Mariners B returned to winning ways after a string of losses when they defeated the Mustangs B team at Braehead Arena in front of a crowd of 50+. Two evenly matched teams faced off against each other but it was the Mariners who bossed the game for long spells and were much more prolific in making their chances count to run out 6-1 victors.
The First period saw some intricate passing by the Mariners pulling the Mustangs all over the place creating chances right left and center but the netminder was equal to them, that was until Marc Simpson broke the deadlock after some pin point passing followed by a deadly finish. Chris Sherlock was next to see the net flutter after his shot from the blue line found its way through a lot of bodies into the bottom corner of the net. 2 goals down the Mustangs were unable to cope with the passing movement from the Mariners, this led to a penalty for tripping seeing the first power play of the game for the Mariners. The powerplay line proved to be effective as William Bruce was able to squeeze through the defence lifting the puck over the netminder to make it 3-0 before the end of the period.
The second period followed in the same manner as the first period, the Mustangs moving the puck forward but unable to shoot past Sarah Gibson in the Mariners goal, helped by a solid defence including Kevin Rafferty who is returning to full fitness after a spell playing in Stornoway. The only goal of the period came from ever improving Ron May-Hilton picking up his second goal of the season turning in a rebound from the edge of the crease, The Mariners took a 4-0 lead into the final period after a fresh ice cut.
The final period again was an even matched affair after both teams getting some rest. Sarah Gibson was still much the thorn in the Mustangs side as they passed up chance after chance to reduce the deficit. Colin Cameron cooly put the puck in the net at the end of a nice Mariners move to add one more to his growing tally for the season. A rush of blood moment seen Andy 'Canada' Logue pick up a 10 minute penalty for pushing an opposing player, meaning he was merely a spectator for the rest of the match. The Mustangs finally got their goal to the annoyance of Sarah Gibson who was looking for her first shut out of the season, an offensive face off was drawn back to the point who fired a one-timer straight in to the net. The scoring wasn't over yet as Andy Campbell raced clear of the defence to slide the puck past the netminder making the final score Mariners 6 Mustangs 1.

Mariners B v Aberdeen North Stars 18/01/14
The Mariners B travelled to Aberdeen looking to avenge their defeat the previous month. The Mariners started the game well even though they went a goal behind quickly. Andy Logue was quickest to react from a faceoff to level the score at 1-1, that scoreline wasn't to remain for long as the North Stars again took the lead after a mix up in defence. Andy Logue turned goalscorer to provider as he assisted for John Hunter to fire past the netminder. However Mariners were struggling to get a hold of the game and they once more went behind, 7 seconds later and it was 3-3. John Hunter won the following faceoff, skated past both defencemen and finished with ease before the buzzer went for the end of the first period.
The second period was one to forget for the Mariners, especially for defence man Alastair Prince, playing his first game for the B team had a wonderful opportunity to get on the scoresheet as a loose puck fell to his stick on the blue line with a clear sight of goal, deciding to hit his shot first time he unfortunately missed the puck leading to a North Stars player to collect the puck skate through and score. Aberdeen went on to score 2 more in the second period without reply, the period finishing 6-3.
The third period was a closer affair but it was still won eventually by the North Starts, the second goal of the night from Andy Logue reduced the gap between the teams but the game ended 8-4 to the North Stars.

Mariners A v Paisley Panthers 05/01/14
The Mariners carried on their impressive performances against Scottish Cup opposition, this time it was the Paisley Panthers who visited Ayr ice rink. It was a face paced exciting game in which the Mariners led on two occasions and even had a chance to snatch victory at the end. The game got off to a flying start with the Panthers getting on the scoreboard after only 12 seconds! It took until the 27th minute until the Mariners responded with a goal, a breakaway goal with Skins feeding John Hunter who fired the puck low past the netminder.
It was 1-1 going in to the 3rd period and it didn't take long for the Panthers to regain the lead 1 minutes into the period, the Mariners; who usuallty suffer from 3rd period syndrome picked up the pace and found an equaliser when Ross Dykes passed back to John Hunter who fired the puck below the netminder to equalise. Only 2 minutes later and the Mariners were ahead; a 3 on 1 breakout seen John Drummond feed Skins who cut inside and shot beyond the netminder. With little more than 4 minutes on the clock the Panthers pulled level again with a shot from the high slot; Garry Grindrod unable to see or do anything about it. There was one last gasp piece of action, Ross Cree was given the puck to send him racing clear through on the netminder with 3 seconds to go he let his shot go but the netminder was equal to the shot and the game ended 3-3.
Goal: John Hunter x2, Skins

Mariners B v North East Nomads 29/12/13
The Mariners took to the road and recorded a 10-2 victory against North East Nomads at Whitley Bay ice rink. After a long bus journey their was a fear that the Mariners would suffer from "bus legs" or something similar. That was not to be the case, the game was controlled in long periods by the Mariners who seen 2 goals from Andy Logue; his first for the Mariners. Skins found the net a total of 5 times and John Hunter, Eric Young and Marc Simpson all contributing with 1 each. A trip to McDonalds on the way home where Kev McCormack managed to spend over £16 on his own meal was by far the most impressive part of the day before beginning the long trip home, enjoying a shandy or two.
I would have loved to elaborate on the goals but I'm not going to lie I can't remember anything about the game itself!

Mariners A v Mustangs 26/11/13 & 01/12/13
The Mariners picked up two victories in 6 days over their friendly rivals the Mustangs; 9-2 at Braehead followed by a 7-5 victory at Ayr ice rink.
The Mariners took full advantage of the large ice pad at Braehead on Tuesday night making the puck do the work saving the legs from tiring. Early in the first period the puck was played back to Iain Hendry on the point, he faked a shot before playing a sideways pass to defence team mate Ally Prince who had enough time and space to pick his place past the netminder. It wasn't to be long until the Mustangs hit back however, some neat mid ice play left the Mariners exposed at the back and a simple pass across goal was put beyond Garry in the Mariners net. Not to be downhearted the Mariners replied swiftly, a break out play passed to Eric who laid it off for John Hunter to skate over the blue line and let go a rasping shot; past Stuart Steele almost bursting the net in the process! There was more joy to come for the Mariners as goals from Ross Dykes and John Hunter followed prior to the 1st period ending 4-1.
The second period was a much tighther affair; the Mustangs first to score making it 4-2. It wasn't long however until the Mariners had regained control of the match goals coming from Ross Cree; a low driven shot after nice interplay with Army. Provider then turned goalscorer with a piece of individual brilliance to go past 2 players then shoot high into the net 6-2.
The third and final period was much of a formality for the Mariners, goals by Ross Dykes, Iain Hendry and Gary Poyser sealed a comfortable 9-2 victory on the road.
Six days later and the two teams were at it again, this time Limekiln Road being the venue. It was to be a much tighter affair. The deadlock was broken by Poyser assisted by Drummond and the scoreline was doubled shortly after a Callum MacLeod unassisted goal, the first period was to end 2-0 to the Mariners.
The second period started in a familiar fashion, Poyser winning the faceoff forward for Drummond to feed William Bruce who scored on 7 seconds; William who has been on fire for the B team scoring his first goal for the A team this season. A couple of penalties for the Ally & Army meant a chance for the Mustangs to make the PP count. It was the Mariners again who scored through Cree assisted by Ross Dykes and Eric Young meaning a 4-0 lead. 2 quick fire goals for the Mustangs breathed life back in to them as the period ended 4-2.
The third period began exactly as the Mariners could have hoped with Poyser scoring from Bruce & Drummond followed by Poyser again assisted by Bruce, the score reading 6-3 you would be excused for thinking the game was over. With little over 10 minutes to go in the third the Mustangs scored to make it a 2 goal game and 3 minutes later it was 6-5! There was a nervous feeling on the Mariners bench as the Mustangs continued in search of the equalising goal, in the dying minutes the Mustangs preferred an extra attacker over the netminder and made one last push for the goal, it was not to be as Chazz stole the puck and fed John Drummond who calmly finished into the empty net as the buzzer sounded. It was a much improved Mustangs team who almost stole the game away from the Mariners, it is however another win which makes two wins in less than a week for the Mariners.

Mariners B v Mustangs 12/11/13
The Mariners continued their run of wins over the Glasgow Mustangs with a 3-1 victory at Braehead ice rink. It was the first time on such a large ice pad for most of the Mariners B team but they did not let it phase them. The first goal came after only 4 minutes in a strange fashion; a double pad save from netminder Jim Foster rebounded to Colin Cameron who skated the enitre length of the rink before shooting low in to the net. It wasn't long before the mariners were at it again, Davie Kerr feeding Ron May-Hilton who placed the puck beyound the netminder for his first goal and the celebration told it all; Ron who only started playing in February is having a season most could only dream of. The Mariners continued to press but were unable to score as the period ended 2-0.
The second period started like a house on fire with the Mustangs scoring after only 21 seconds, the remaining of the period continued at a high intensity with both teams largely cancelling each other out. The third period followed on from the second until the final 2 minutes; the Mustangs made a sloppy line change which was called for too many men on the ice by the referee, The Mariners called on the power play line and within 20 seconds had scored through William Bruce to make it 3-1 and seal the win for the Mariners.

Mariners A v Buccaneers 20/10/13
The Mariners got back to winnings ways in spectacular fashion against the Paisley Buccaneers on Sunday evening at Ayr ice rink. The Buccaneers, playing their first match of the season were below par in the beginning allowing The Mariners to push into a 5 goal lead in the first period. The second period continued in the same fashion with The Mariners punishing a sloppy Buccaneers team to take an 11-0 lead, thanks to some instrumental netminding by Garry Grindrod who secured his first shutout of the season as Jim Foster replaced him on 30 minutes. A couple of goals from The Buccaneers were to finally come, the score at the end of the second period, 14-2.
The third period was a much tighter affair, both goalies playing well while both teams skaters began to tire, 8 goals were to be shared evenly giving a final result of 18-6.
It was a pretty routine win for The Mariners who travel to Glenrothes next weekend for the Glenrothes tournament, if they play the same standard of hockey as against The Buccaneers they should give a good account of themselves and with a bit of luck you never know what will happen.
There you ARE!

Mariners A v Ayr Lions 29/09/13
Ayr Lions edged out a 10-6 victory against the Mariners A team at Ayr ice rink. The Mariners were looking to continue their streak of victories following on from back to back wins against Edinburgh Stingers but it was not to be as they came up against a very good Ayr Lions team. A strong start from the Lions meant they took a quick 2 goal lead, it wasn't long before the Mariners took a foothold in the game and grabbed a goal to reduce the score line to 2-1 at the end of the first period. A quick ice cut and the game was back on, it wasn't long until the Mariners has tied the game at 2-2 which appeared to register with the Lions as things began to get a little on the ugly side eventually seeing Lions player John Clancey asked to leave the ice for an early shower. The Lions used this as encouragement though, scoring 3 more before the end of the period. The final period was the Mariners best period of the match, and was a delight to watch as the play went from end to end. 4 goals for the Mariners being the highlight, unfortunately the Lions replied with 5 in the period to see the match out 10-6. An exciting game for the 30 or so supporters in the rink as both teams gave everything to win, the Scottish cup Ayr Lions were just too strong on this occasion but the gap is closing.

Mariners B v Mustangs B 28/09/13
The Mariners B team got their season underway with an impressive 5-1 victory over the Glasgow Mustangs at Auchenharvie ice rink. An impressive B team came out the traps the better and raced in to a 3-0 lead by the end of the first period. The remainder of the game was much tighter as the Mustangs began to move the puck well and threaten Garry Grindrod in the Mariners goal, however both netminders were playing well and neither team were able to score in the second period. The final period of the match was again a tightly fought affair with end to end hockey being played, the mustangs scored only a few minutes in which gave them a sniff of a victory, this goal only spurred on the Mariners who would further impose themselves on the match scoring 2 more to end the game 5-1. Overall it was an extremley good showing by the Mariners B, they can now look forward to more impressive displays in the future.

Edinburgh Stingers v Mariners 08/09/13
The Mariners secured thier first victory on the road in a late night match at Murrayfield ice rink against Edinburgh Stingers. It didn't take long for the mixed Mariners team to go ahead, infact David Kerr slotting past the netminder after only 34 seconds assisted by Gary Poyser. It wasn't to continue in that manner though, the Stingers hitting back with two quick fire goals. Eric Young continued his goal scoring streak by forcing the puck past the netminder after some good play by Ross Cree and John Hunter to tie the game at the first break.
It was the Mariners who struck first again through an unassisted goal by Ross Cree early in the second period but a similar story resulted in the Stingers first level the game then go one ahead much to the Mariners annoyance. A bit of good fortune presented Gary Poyser with an opportunity to equalise, which he did with some style to ensure the game was tied at the second intermission.
The match was evenly balanced and it was going to take something special by either team to break the deadlock and force the victory in the final period, that something special came for the Mariners in the form of new recruit Ross Dykes, Ross had been threatining the Stingers goal all game but with no luck. However that was all to change as Iain Hendry forced his way along the boards to the corner before cutting the puck back to Ross who finally beat the netminder to notch his first goal for the Mariners. A late powerplay for the Mariners resulted in John Drummond setting up Ross Dykes for his second goal of the match and with that the game won and the Mariners could celebrate on the road home.

Mariners v Edinburgh Stingers 01/09/13
ScMariners started their season with a 9-0 victory over Edinburgh Stingers at Auchenharvie ice rink. All the hard pre-season work paid off for the Mariners as they took an early lead through John Hunter, Colin Cameron was next up to open his scoring and John Hunter bagged his second shortly before the end of the first period.
The Stingers were struggling to keep up with an energetic Mariners team, goals from Callum MacLeod, John Hunter, Eric Young and Ross Cree with no reply meant that going in to the final 20 minutes the Mariners were leading 7-0.
A rather sluggish 3rd period seen the Stingers come more in to the match however they were to be frustrated with each and every save that debut netminder Jim Foster made on his way to a shut out. David Kerr and Eric Young managed to score goals in the final period to ensure the Mariners ran out with a final score of 9-0.
It was a brilliant first match of the season for the Mariners, a tougher test will be waiting on them next Sunday when Stingers return the fixture in Edinburgh.

Mariners Invitational 2013
Highland Capitals took the trophy up north after a 7-3 win over the Mariners A team at the Mariners tournament.
A brilliant weekend ended with a sour taste in the Mariners A mouths, after winnning all 7 round robin matches they secured a final place against the Highland Capitals, a team who they had defeated early that day. After taking a 2-0 lead early on in the match the Caps began to force the match and turned the game in the favour eventually running out 7-3 victors. Off the ice antics put a damper on the presentation but the Mariners held their heads high and gave the Capitals the deserved respect.
The Mariners B who were also entered in to the tournament did a brilliant job, they had narrow loses against the Lions, North Stars and were very unlucky not to get a draw against the Nomads after a shot rebounded off the post in the dying minutes.
On behalf of everyone at the Mariners congratulations to the Highland Capitals on their victory and thank you to all the other teams who competed over the weekend! Hopefully we will see you all next year for another shot at the cup.

Mariners 'B' @ Aberdeen Tournament 19/05/13
Mariners B took the long trip to Aberdeen to compete in their first tournament this weekend. Even though the teams competing were largely made up of A team players the Mariners gave a brave performance. The Mariners fought through to make the 3rd/4th playoff, trailing the game 3-1 the Mariners turned the game around to lead 4-3, that lead was brief however and eventually Dundee Devils won the game 5-4.
Results aside the tournament was a brilliant experience for all the players involved many of whom have never experienced tournament hockey before, all players involved will have benefited from the exposure and I'm sure they will all be ready for the next tournament!

Mariners 'A' @ Mustangs 'A' 07-04-13
The Mariners final warm up game before the Scottish Plate ended on a positive note, a late goal from Iain Hendry sealed the 6-5 victory over the Mustangs at Kilmarnock ice rink. The Mariners started the stronger of the teams and rushed in to a two goal lead, Liam Timothy continuing his scoring form since joining the team assisted by Iain Hendry & Chazz Crawford then to be followed by a trademark Kevin Rafferty slap shot assisted by John Hunter & David Armstrong. The Mustangs replied through Lawson to be within touching distance. The Mariners, who have never lost to the Mustangs pulled clear again, a move finished off by John Hunter after some intelligent corner play by Eric Young, an unassisted goal from John Hunter was next to hit the net. The scoring wasn't finished there, Mustangs were to score through Brown to end the period 4-2.
The game was spun on it's head after the first interval, Brady scored for the Mustangs after only 30 seconds to make it a 1 goal game once more. Some good attacking passing by David Armstrong & Eric Young was finished off by John Hunter, in off the post to complete his hat-trick. Brady was to see the back of the net once more before the period end to make the score 5-4 to the Mariners.
The third period was another tough one for the Mariners as the Mustangs really pushed hard for the win, a chance was squandered when Armstrong & Hunter went 2 on 0 against the keeper, a chance that surely would have closed out the game, it wasn't to be and the Mustangs replied with a game tie-ing goal with a little over 10 minutes to go. The winning goal came with 3 minutes left on the clock, Gary Poyser feeding Iain Hendry who let a rocket fly low under the netmider. The game remained at 6-5 until the final buzzer.
Much better will be expected of the Mariners in the Scottish Plate later this month, the Mustangs really pushed all game and may even count them selves unlucky not to have secured the first victory over the Mariners.

Skyhawks @ Mariners 'B' 16-02-13
The Mariners 3 game win streak came to an end on Saturday night as the were defeated by Carnegie Skyhawks 10-6 at Ayr ice rink. Mariners only previous match against Carnegie was in the Billy Marr memorial trophy 2011, Mariners the eventual winners of that tournament.
The Mariners were made to pay for a slow sloppy first period. they were 2 goals behind after only 3 minutes. Too many penalties cost Mariners dearly and Carnegie made them pay, even goals from Eric Young and Gary Potter was not enough the score at the end of the first period was 5-2.
Carnegie were the faster out the blocks in the second period and had scored another 2 goals within the first 3 minutes, goals from John Hunter, Jim Paton and William Bruce pulled the home side into the game before more penalties gave Carnegie the chance to pull ahead which they did. 9-5 the score at the interval.
The Mariners looked to pull the game back in the final third, however there were only to be 2 goals in the final period, 1 going each way. Eric Young getting the goal for The Mariners, it wasn't to be enough and Carnegie secured the victory with a late goal.
Final Score: Mariners 6 - 10 Carnegie

Mariners 'B' @ Glasgow Mustangs 'B' 20-01-13
The Mariners left it late to overcome the Mustangs in what was to be a tightly contested game. The Mustangs started well and with only 1:37 on the
clock they took the lead with a shot from just inside the blue line. The Mariners then took control of the game with some hard forechecking which paid
off as William Bruce opened the scoring assisted by Colin Cameron and Elaine McBride. Two more goals were to come for the Mariners before the period ended, both coming from defenceman Kevin Rafferty, his first an unassisted goal skating from his own defensive zone, the second assisted by Andrew Campbell and Garry Grindrod. The first period ending Mariners 3 Mustangs 1.
The second period was very tightly contested with both teams picking up the pace, a fight broke out which led to Davie Fisher sitting out for two minutes, a third man in call for the Mustangs resulted in one of their players sitting in the stands for the rest of the game. Neither team could find the killer touch therefore at the end of the second it was still Mariners 3 Mustangs 1.
The Mariners were starting to create chances with ease now but nobody could find the goal that would have put the game to bed and it was to come back to haunt The Mariners. With 5 minutes left Mustangs scored through Kangley to make it 3-2. Kangley was at it again 4 minutes later to tie the game up at 3 a piece. The Mariners won a face off in the oppositions zone and sent on their strongest 5 players with 11 seconds left. The face off was won backwards to Rafferty who struck the post with his shot, it was picked up by Gary Grindrod in the corner who seen Kevin Rafferty drive to the net, he collected the pass and fired high in to the net as the buzzer sounded, both teams protested to the referees as they consulted with each other. The goal was good and The Mariners bench celebrated a deserved win over the Mustangs!

Mariners A took to the road again to face the Edinburgh Stingers for the first game of 2013. Mariners went behind after only 6 minutes but managed to come back at the Stingers with 2 goals, first by Eric Young assisted by Ross Cree & John Hunter to be followed by Ian Forsyth assisted by John Drummond. Mariners taking a 2-1 lead in to the 2nd period.
Once again it was the Stingers who struck lucky first in the 2nd period to make it 2-2, however a splendid slapshot from the blue line nestled nicely in the top corner from Callum McLeod assisted by John Hunter to give The Mariners the lead once again.
The final period started much like the others with The Stingers striking first, a number of chances were missed by The Mariners. It was beginning to look like a draw was on the cards until John Drummond fired the puck from the corner towards the goal, the puck hitting the netminders skate and in to the net, with 36 seconds on the clock the match was all but won.

The Mariners kicked off their festive season with a thrilling victory over the newly formed Glasgow Mustangs. The Mustangs playing in their first ever match had many players from the now de-funct Glasgow Grinders in their roster which was always going to lead to an exciting game!
It only took 24 seconds before the Mariners had the puck in the net, a goal from Gary Poyser assisted by John Drummond & Calum McLeod. However it wasn't to be all one way traffic as the Mustangs replied at 2:33, following the Mustangs goal the Mariners pushed on and John Drummond had his chance to score assisted by Iain Forsyth & Gary Poyser. Iain Forsyth then pulled the Mariners 2 clear assisted by John Drummond. The Mustangs had an opportunity to pull one back as Liam Brady was brought down when through on the netminder, the referee deciding that penalty shot was to be awarded. However Gary Grindrod stood tall in his goal to save from Brady. It wasn't long before the Mariners had scored again, Gary Poyser knocking in his second of the night assisted by John Drummond & Sandy Alexander. The period ending with a score of Mariners 4 Mustangs 1.

The Mustangs fired back to make it 8-2 through Ryan O'Neil. It wasn't long until the Mariners were on the score sheet again this time it was Calum Mcleod with an unassisted goal. Iain Forsyth was next to score his hat-trick assisted by John Drummond. Mark Byrne, known at training for his slap shot that can actually move the net was next to score, possibly the worst slap shot Mark will ever hit, however it made it in the net to make it 11-2. Another hat-trick was to be gathered by John Drummond, a clever volley of the puck as it came back off the goalie, assisted by Iain Forsyth & Gary Poyser. The final goal of the match however went to the Mustangs, an unassisted goal by Charlie Milligan.
The final score Mariners 12 Mustangs 3.

Mariners 'A' @ Ayr Lions; Glasgow Mustangs @ Mariners 'B' 18-11-12
The Ayr Lions hosted Mariners A on Saturday 17th. The Lions raced ahead in the match to lead 3-0. A lovely passing move through Eric Young & Ross Cree was finally forced in by John Hunter to make it 3-1 going into the first intermission.
The Mariners had a period to forget in the 2nd, losing the period 5-0 meaning the score sat at 8-1 in the Lions favour after 40 minutes.
A short break to allow the ice to be re surfaced gave the Mariners time to re-focus, the break worked, and a second goal in as many games for Kevin Rafferty assisted by Eric Young & John Hunter opened the scoring in the 3rd period. There was one more goal in the game and it went to the Lions to make the score 9-2 in the end. The Mariners will not feel too down heartened with this result as they played well against a full strength Ayr Lions, who on their day are one of Scotland’s top teams.
Sunday the 18th seen the Mariners B host the Mustangs B in a hard fought match at the Galleon Ice Rink. The Mariners started the match strong, racing in to a 2 goal lead which they held on to until the end of the period, goals from Thomas Mills unassisted & William Bruce assisted by Gary Grindrod. The 2nd period was not as straight forward for the Mariners, The Mustangs hit back to win the period 2-1, the goal coming from Gary Grindrod assisted by Davie Kerr. Although not the ideal period for the Mariners they still led the game 3-2 after 40 minutes. A lot of penalty minutes in the final period took it’s toll on the Mariners, even with a 2nd goal of the game from William Bruce they lost the period 3-1.
The Mariners may feel aggrieved with the score as they were never in a losing position until that final goal.

Mariners 'B' @ Aberdeen; Mariners 'A' @ Edinburgh 13-11-2012
Early season for the Mariners have seen promising results for the first team and the newly formed Mariners development team. The Mariners "B"
team took a long trip to Aberdeen for their first match of the season, they held out for the first two periods only losing 1 goal however tired legs gave way in the final 20 minutes with the final score reading 4-0 to the hosts. However this is a very promising result for the team who will be sure to bounce back in the future.
Meanwhile the Mariners first team got off to a brilliant start, their first match seen them taking a trip through to the Capital to play the Lions at Murrayfield Ice Rink. The match was fought by two strong teams, played at a high pace considering it was both teams first match. The Mariners took an early lead with a goal from Skins assisted by Gary Poyser before being pegged back to end the 1st 1-1. The second period seen more goals, a second for Skins assisted by Sandy and a rare goal from Sandy Alexander meant the Mariners had 3 goals on the board. Some lapse defending allowed the Lions back in to tie at 3-3 going into the final 20 minutes. A solitary goal from Kevin Rafferty, a low driven slap shot from the blue line was enough to put the Mariners ahead and with some dogged defending seen the final buzzer go to give the Mariners their first win of the season.

First game face's off around 1200 on Saturday and continue with all teams playing at least 4 games until 9ish. The Sunday starts a little earlier at 0900 and finishes up at midday. For those wanting to watch come along and see some of the other clubs from around the UK playing, make some new contacts and have a laugh. Hopefully we'll all make it for a few beers in the evening somewhere nearby.
Teams include, Mariners (obviously), Paisley Buccaneers, Highland Capitals, North East Nomads, Central Scotland Oilers, Glasgow Grinders, Edinburgh Lions, Aberdeen Northstars.
Looking forward to it.

Just a quick update:
Game stats have been updated now with all our games, Just finishing off updating player stats so should be accurate in the next week or so.
A really up and down season for us, some good close games and wins, however also some bad results as well :( Boo... but such is the game...
The last two games saw the team put up a great effort against Ayr Jets holding them for most of the game but finishing a respectable 3-5 and then the B team winning 4-2 against the Glasgow Grinders in what was another close game.
All going well we will be holding a small tournament at Auchenharvies during the summer for a few of the teams who dont normally make the Plate or Cup Full details will follow.
Cheers

Hello troops !
Busy wee start to the new year for the Mariners, a few games played recently both home and away, with a lot of our newer skaters getting into the games now. Its always hard for new guys to get into the games, but thankfully those who have played put in a good effort and although never scored the mountain of goals we need to win, did a fair job.
The stats pages for both games and players points are being kept up to date now I've worked out how to add tables, so let the more vain in the team start arguing over who gets what on the assists.
A few more games arranged over the coming months, so keep your eyes peeled on the calendar for updates on this and the training times. The training times have changed a little as well, they are updated on the site, but have also been sent out via email to everyone for your info.
Any teams reading that want a game get in touch and we'll try to sort something out. Sadly at this stage we cannot get any ice at Auchenharvies at the weekend so are playing "home" games at the Galleon in Kilmarnock.
Any updates or suggestions to the site are always welcome.
Cheers
Neil

Ok, a bit late late i know but here it is.. The result from our first game of the season. Last sunday we drove over to Edinburgh to play the Stingers. It turned out to be a great 50 mins of hockey just a shame the game lasted 60 mins :( . Lost 3 goals in the last 10 minutes to loose 6-2. I'm blaming a lack of exercise during the summer.
Goal one Iain Forsyth assisted by Neil S Dunn at 23:41
Goal two John Hunter assisted by Luke Kearsley & Ross Cree at 44:58
David Ord 2 mins for boarding at 14:05
David Armstrong 2 mins for tripping at 15:31
Next game is at Dumfries against the Durham Dragons on sunday 28th 7pm face off and I believe we are playing the Irvine Flyers at Auchenharvies on the 10th Sept about 3pm in a promotional match, full details to be confirmed.

Welcome back ! The summer break for the Mariners is now over. Training resumes on Tuesday 2nd August where it will be pretty obvious who has sat on their backside drinking beer all summer. Our first game looks likely to be about the 21st Aug in Edinburgh against the Stinger but we still wait for confirmation on this. I know many of you would be looking forward to playing some home games at the new rink this season and we are in discussions with management at Auchinharvies to secure some ice time. This is proving difficult now that Harvies have to accommodate two rinks worth of business since the Magnum closed, as soon as we can get ice for games we will get home games organised.
Cheers , Neil.

Guys stats have been updated with the results from the last game.. These dont include stats from the Scottish Plate comp as 1. I dont have them and 2. not sure if they will count ;)
On the Scottish Plate.... A superb effort by all and although we never walked away with a win I think we put up a great fight and never lay down and let any of the teams hammer us, cant remember game scores but dont think we got beat by more than two goals in any game and sadly only lost the last game in the final 30 seconds after being up 3-2 ish (i think) .
Lets keep the heads up and focus on the Billy Marr Tourni on 21st May in Kirkcaldy.

A busy two weeks for the Mariners have past, moved to the new rink at Auchenharvies which is a superb regulation size, plexy glass walled, proper team benched, penalty boxed rink , with changing rooms bigger than even some of our players could fill !!! We look forward to our future at the rink and have to make a mention to North Ayrshire Council & Partners for completing the project and providing such good facilities... if anyone from North Ayrshire Council reads this and wants to sponsor us feel free to use the appropriate contact link..;)
We've played a couple of games recently as well but have to mention the game of the Mariners history... an 18-4 win over the Hamilton Hawks B. The Mariners played fantastic Hockey throughout the game and put in an outstanding effort.
We've made such superb progress in the past year, not only as players (a term still used loosely) but as a whole team. Having help on and off the ice (Owen & Ian) has help us greatly, thanks.
For those that don't know, we have made the Scottish Plate Competition in Dumfries this year. Another tremendous achievement for us as we've never even been looked at being involved before and look forward to showing the other teams how much we've grown ;) .
Cheers

Last night the Mariners stayed up well past their bedtime and ventured up north to play the return match against the Leuchers Knights. An extremely late face off following the previous nights partying didn't do us any good. Despite a poor start we held off the 1st period to a 1-1 draw, entering the 2nd and still showing no signs of any improvement Leuchers to the score to 4-2. Finally the late night and tired legs got the better of us and the game finished in a disappointing 8-4 loss. Booooooo..
Congrats to man of the match Iain Forsyth got scooped all 4 goals and Eric, John and Paul each with an assist. Only other mention goes to Luke Kearsley who got 2 minutes for Slashing after a Leuchers player hit himself in the head with his own stick?? Hmmm..
Next game is on Tuesday night. This is the last session at the Magnum EVER for the Mariners before the Magnum closes its doors for good, and we all move off to Auchenharvies... bring your tissues, it may be emotional.

Sunday 27th game against Dundee Wildcats is no longer going ahead, so apologies to those of you who were making arrangements or changes to your work shifts. This is out with our control and due to Dundee having issues with their ice slot. What this does mean is that we have played 5 out of or 6 pre Plate qualifiers and could very well be into the Scottish Plate tournament later this year, as soon as all the details are known I'll post up the information.
For those who have been eagerly awaiting the update, this years stats have been added onto the (wait for it...) yes, the stats pages.... The website host pages wont allow the stats to display so they have been added as hyper-links and should (?) open in another page. If anyone has any problems in accessing them let me know otherwise i'll presume they work fine.
No confirmed game coming up as yet, but two possible away fixtures so pencil in 27th March against Leuchars Knights and around the 25th April against Ayr Lions, once they are confirmed we'll let you know.
Also keep your diary free around 15th March before training, there may well be an opportunity for the team to get a pre opening visit to the new home of the Mariners at Harvies new rink in Saltcoats, full details will follow.

Saturday 20th saw the Newcastle Predators taking a drive up to show us how they play hockey, and that would be a little bit better than us, at least enough to beat us 14-4, real good game so thanks to them for making the effort, its appreciated.
Sunday 21st was a different story with us taking a confident win over the Stirling Patriots, the 1st two periods were neck and neck however in the 3rd we pulled it together and took the period 8-2 for a 12-7 win.
Stats:
Vs Newcastle: Gary Poyser 3+0, Arnar Smith 1+0, John Hunter 0+1, Ross Cree 0+1 + 2 mins bench penalty - too many players, David Ord 0+1 .
@ Stirling: J Hunter 4+1, E Young 4+0, R Cree 2+2, J Easton 1+0, A Alexander 1+3,
C Frame +2mins delay of game, J Easton +2mins interference.

Sundays game against the Lions finished in an 1-11 loss.
By all accounts the Mariners held up well against a faster and more experienced team and didn't make it an easy win for them. A congrats to all players who gave 100% effort through all 3 periods.
Stats: N S-Dunn 1+0, J Easton 0+1, Man of the Match G Grindrod.
Next games on the 20th & 21st Nov, and as always names on an email to Eric with your availability.

K Rafferty 0+1, G Poyser 0+, G Grindrod 0+1
R Cree +2 min Interference
